Name the action, not only the topic

“Inclusion training” leaves many design decisions unanswered. What should a manager, buyer or service representative do differently? A concrete objective might be to respond to an accommodation request using the organization’s process, identify an avoidable barrier in a procurement brief or lead a discussion that makes space for different perspectives.

Build around realistic practice

Use scenarios that reflect the learner’s authority, time pressures and access to support. Keep the scenario specific enough to require a decision, but remove identifying details from any real situation. Invite participants to explain their reasoning, compare options and identify when they should seek further guidance.

  • A short scenario linked to a clear learning objective.
  • Time to practise a response and receive feedback.
  • A job aid connected to the organization’s actual process.
  • Accessible materials and participation options agreed before delivery.

Give managers a role in the follow-through

Learners need a chance to use the material. Agree in advance how managers will reinforce the practice, where staff can ask questions and whether a process or resource needs updating. A short follow-up discussion can reveal obstacles that were not visible during the workshop.

Choose evidence that matches the objective

Attendance shows participation; a satisfaction survey shows how people experienced the session. Neither proves a change in behaviour. Consider a practice exercise, a later review of the relevant process or a structured reflection on how the learning was applied. Keep the evaluation proportionate, explain how information will be used and avoid promising organizational outcomes from a single session.
